Two goals from returning Jags powerhouse Joe McCabe inspired Buckie Thistle to a comfortable win over Tayport in the Scottish Cup First Round.
The visitors began on the front foot and Andrew MacAskill put them ahead after ten minutes, coming inside his man and firing a left footed strike across the keeper into the bottom right corner from 22 yards.
Ten minutes later Marcus Goodall broke down the left, found Joe McCabe in space and he crashed a superb strike into the top right corner from outside the penalty area.
The Highland League side were in full control now and claimed for a penalty when MacAskill’s cross from the right looked to bounce onto the hand of the sliding Jamie Hume, but nothing was given.
MacAskill did win a penalty on 41 minutes, latching onto Ryan Fyffe's through ball before being bundled to the ground by a home defender. Jack Murray stepped up to slam the ball into the right corner of the net from the spot.
Gary Sutherland missed a great chance to pull one back for Tayport just before the break, stabbing the ball wide from close range with the goal gaping.
Darryl McHardy headed wide from a MacAskill corner early in the second half, then Max Barry curled wide from the left of the penalty box when well placed.
Home goalkeeper Darryl Burns made a decent save from an inswinging MacAskill cross, then Jack Murray’s header at the back post bounced over the crossbar.
A great team move saw MacAskill play McCabe through on goal, but Burns raced from his line to block.
McCabe and MacAskill combined well again on the hour mark, but MacAskill was also denied at the front post by the Tayport number one.
Innes Barbour then smashed a decent strike wide of the far post for the home side.
Buckie made it four on 69 minutes, McCabe flicking a near post free kick from MacAskill off the body of Burns, the ball spinning up and over a defender on the line and into the net for Joe’s second of the game.
Cohen Ramsay screwed an effort wide from the edge of the penalty area with 5 minutes remaining, but that was the end of the scoring, and it’s the Jags who march through to the second round.
Sunday’s draw saw Buckie handed a tough trip to fellow Highland League side Forres Mechanics in Round Two.
