10-MAN BUCKIE MAKE BROXBURN PAY PENALTY

A stunning comeback from Buckie Thistle saw Josh Peters score with the last kick of both normal and extra time to take their Scottish Cup tie at Broxburn Athletic to a penalty shoot-out.

The never-say-die Jags then triumphed 5-4 on penalties, with Stuart Knight saving the home side’s fifth spot kick, giving Peters the chance to win it from 12 yards and set up a mouthwatering clash with Celtic at Parkhead.

Hamish Munro was drafted into the starting eleven at right back after Joe McCabe was injured in the warm up.

A scrappy opening saw both sides content to feel each other out, with no real opportunities for either team.

Jack MacIver had a free kick blocked by a home hand, and Jags were claiming for a penalty when his second effort from 20 yards looked to hit another home arm.

The visitors suffered a big setback when forward Scott Adams picked up a second booking and his marching orders for an innocuous looking challenge on 22 minutes.

MacIver then saw a powerful shot saved to his right by Robert Watt from 22 yards.

Max Barry fired an effort over from the edge of the penalty area after a cutback from Josh Peters on 34 minutes.

Jack Murray missed a good chance right on half time, heading MacIver’s corner back across goal and wide of the right hand post.

There was still time for Gary Brass to get on the end of a cross from the right, but he couldn’t direct his effort on target and Knight gathered easily.

Barry had the first decent effort at goal of the second period, curling his effort straight at keeper Watt from 20 yards.

Chances were also hard to come by in the second half, before Barry drove a shot just a yard wide with 15 minutes left.

Cohen Ramsay created a chance for Peters with a good run down the left flank, but the Jags number nine was offside when he blasted over from the full back’s through ball.

Broxburn took the lead with ten minutes remaining, a decent move saw the ball worked wide to Ross Nimmo, who played it first time across goal and it was converted at the far post by ERROL DOUGLAS.

Jags boss Graeme Stewart responded by throwing on Lewis Mackinnon and Marcus Goodall for Hamish Munro and Ramsay.

Peters had the ball in the net late on but he was flagged offside, then Darryl McHardy had a volley cleared off the line in injury time as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.

Visiting captain Sam Pugh fired a half chance over the top fter the ball broke to him 16 yards out from a free kick.

Just when it looked all over for the visitors, a ball into the penalty area from Murray broke to PETERS and he fired into the far corner from eight yards to take it to extra time.

Sub Mackinnon had an audacious effort from inside his own half saved by a back-pedalling Watt early in extra time, before Broxburn came close when a cross-cum shot from sub Conor Thomson skimmed off the top of the crossbar to safety.

Shaun Wood came on for the injured Max Barry and he made a good run down the right on 109 minutes, but he could only direct his cross onto the top of the net.

Knight made a good save from an excellent Callum Bremner volley from outside the area, then Broxburn grabbed a second on 117 minutes when LEWIS TURNER’s free kick from out on the left swept in at the near post past a stunned Knight.

This Jags side never know when they’re beaten though, and they came so close to equalising with three efforts against the woodwork within a crazy 60-second spell – Goodall’s speculative lob into the area coming back off the crossbar, with the follow up from Peters crashing against the post. The visitors worked the ball back into the area and incredibly McHardy’s shot smacked off the post to safety with Watt beaten.

There was still time for Knight to launch himself into a towering header from MacIver’s corner and PETERS was there again to divert it into the net from close range and send the visiting fans wild.

Onto penalties and both sides scored their first four spot kicks – Jack Murray, Darryl McHardy, Lewis Mackinnon and Jack MacIver netting confidently for the Jags.

Knight then produced a superb stop to deny Douglas, and Peters slotted his penalty low into the bottom left corner to send the Jags into Round Four.

Buckie Th: S. Knight; H. Munro (L. Mackinnon 81), J. Murray, D. McHardy, C. Ramsay (M. Goodall 81); S. Pugh (c), D. Wood; J. MacIver, M. Barry (S. Wood 105), S. Adams; J. Peters.
