STORRIER SAVES SEND JAGS THROUGH

Two penalty saves from substitute goalkeeper Euan Storrier sent Buckie Thistle through to the Quarter Finals of the Aberdeenshire Cup and a meeting with local rivals Deveronvale.

After 90 minutes of goalless action, Storrier made excellent stops from Chris Antionazzi and Ramsay Davidson, giving Joe McCabe the chance to slot home the winning penalty via the hand of Gregg Sim and the left-hand post.

Sam Morrison, Cohen Ramsay and Scott Adams returned to the visitors’ line up, with Sam Pugh out through work commitments and Darryl McHardy injured. Hamish Munro dropped to the bench.

The Jags started well, Scott Adams missing a chance on nine minutes when he failed to connect properly from 12 yards after Josh Peters raced in behind and squared for the Jags forward.

Peters then latched onto a slide-rule pass from Andy MacAskill on the left side of the penalty area only to blast his shot high into the side netting.

Cohen Ramsay also made a good run down the left flank on 15 minutes, flashing an excellent delivery across the face of goal, but no one could get on the end of it for the away side.

Adams was unlucky with a superbly dinked effort from the edge of the penalty area that drifted just wide of the far post.

Dee responded with a Michael Philipson 25-yard free kick that went tamely wide just before the break, before Jags keeper Stuart Knight hobbled off injured to be replaced by Euan Storrier.

A scrappy start to the second period saw home striker Lachie Macleod fire the first real chance over the bar on the hour mark.

Mackinnon made his first changes three minutes later, Lyall Keir and Liam Harvey replacing Andrew MacAskill and Jack MacIver.

Hamish Macleod then cut inside his man and fired his shot just over Storrier’s crossbar from 20 yards.

With 18 minutes remaining, Daniel Hoban rushed out to claim a through ball and was adjudged to handled it outside the penalty area, and was sent off by referee Kevin Murray. Substitute goalkeeper Gregg Sim came on for Mark Gilmour and went in goal.

Buckie were searching for the winner now and Max Barry drove inside and curled a great effort just wide from 20 yards on 83 minutes.

Substitute Harvey then almost pounced on a Darryn Kelly header back to his goalkeeper, but Sim smothered his effort well.

The visitors thought they’d won it late on when Adams knocked home McCabe’s towering header towards goal from close range, but he was flagged offside and the goal was chalked off.

There was still time for Philipson to rifle an effort just wide from 20 yards, before Jags almost gifted Dee the winner with some kamikaze defending, but Antionazzi could only roll his effort wide of the far post.

Onto penalties and Philipson converted first for the home side, with Jack Murray replying for Jags. Ethan Cairns made it 2-1, then Sim blocked Keir’s low blasted effort to give Dee the advantage.

Storrier made a great save high to his left from Antoniazzi’s penalty, then Max Barry converted his spot-kick to level matters at two apiece.

Hamish Macleod and Liam Harvey confidently netted from the spot to make it 3-3, before Storrier made another fine stop to keep out Ramsay Davidson’s effort.

McCabe sent Jags through with a well-placed penalty in off the post to the delight of his team-mates, giving Buckie their second successful shoot-out in a row.

An away tie at neighbours Deveronvale awaits The Jags, at a venue still to be confirmed due to the floodlight issue at Princess Royal Park.
